North Africa is harnessing its diverse energy resources to tackle growing global demand, expand exports, and secure a sustainable future. Major projects across the region are redefining its role as a global energy hub.
Egypt Takes Wind Energy to New Heights
Egypt is propelling its renewable energy sector forward with the 10 GW Suez Wind Power Project, the largest wind facility in the country. Backed by $170 million from the African Development Bank, this $1.1 billion venture, led by ACWA Power, will generate enough energy to power 11 million households and offset 25.5 million tons of carbon emissions. Additionally, the project aims to save $6.5 billion annually in gas costs while creating 120,000 jobs. It marks a significant step toward Egypt’s goal of sourcing 42% of its energy from renewables by 2035.
Egypt’s Natural Gas Sector Gets a Boost
Egypt’s position as a gas powerhouse in the Eastern Mediterranean is bolstered by its vast reserves, conservatively estimated at 1.8 trillion cubic meters. With operational LNG export capacity, Egypt plays a critical role as a regional gas hub. The country also controls vital energy infrastructure, including the Suez Canal—through which 10% of global LNG transits—and the Suez-Mediterranean Pipeline, further cementing its pivotal role in global energy logistics. These strategic assets, combined with significant investments from Western energy giants such as ExxonMobil, Chevron, and TotalEnergies, have solidified Egypt’s standing as a top export hub for natural gas.
In addition to its export capabilities, Egypt is addressing domestic energy challenges with the Western Desert 11 Project, a $732 million initiative aimed at enhancing the Western Desert Gas Complex. By adding a 600,000 million cubic feet per day processing facility, the project will ensure a steady LNG supply for local industries while supporting the country’s broader energy goals.
Algeria Expands Its Natural Gas Legacy
As Africa’s largest natural gas producer, Algeria is modernizing its hydrocarbon industry with the Hassi R’Mel Expansion Project, the country’s largest gas field. Sonatrach’s $2.3 billion initiative includes upgrades to production facilities and networks, set to boost output by 2027. The project strengthens Algeria’s position as Europe’s third-largest gas supplier.
Morocco and the UK Connect Through Clean Energy
Morocco is pushing boundaries with the Morocco-UK Power Project, a groundbreaking initiative that will link North Africa’s renewable energy to the UK through a 4,000 km subsea cable. With $25 million from TotalEnergies and additional support from global financiers, the project will power 7 million UK homes, providing 8% of the country’s electricity needs.
A Hub for Green Hydrogen
North Africa is stepping up as a global leader in green hydrogen production, hosting ambitious projects like Globeleq’s SCZONE and ACME Group’s Sokhna in Egypt, as well as CWP’s AMAN project in Morocco. These initiatives cement the region as a top investment destination for renewable energy.
North Africa’s dynamic energy initiatives underscore its pivotal role in shaping the future of global energy.
